The building that house this museum was built in the 1880s by Virginia's then attorney general. The museum today commemorates the pioneer period of the state's history and give visitors an idea of what life at the turn of the twentieth cnetury was like. Picnic tables are available.
Wilderness Road State Park can be found roughly 40 miles west of Big Stone Gap, VA. One of the newer parks in the Virginia Park System, the recreation area here includes picnic areas, biking and hiking trails and primitive camping facilities.
Natural Tunnel State Park is located roughly 12 miles south of Big Stone Gap, VA. This natural tunnel was carved over the centuries by groundwater containing carbonic acid and Stock Creek eroding the walls of the underground passageway. Camping facilities are provided, as well as a pool, food concessions and interpretive programs, all for visitor use.
